How Your City Government Works

General Operation

The City of Alma is governed by an elected Mayor and Council elected to four year staggered terms. The Mayor is elected at-large and votes in case of a tie. The Council is elected by district. The City Council appoints a City Manager to manage the city's day-to-day operations. The City Council utilizes its goals and policies to guide their decision making process.

Citizens, staff, and the City Council themselves can recommend action. Ideas and proposals are reviewed by the City Council at their monthly work session. Appointments, ordinances, and all other business is carried out during the council meeting. Once a decision has been made by the Council, it is the City Manager's job to see that the decision is put into action.
